A flat waistband with belt loops sits at the natural waist, closed by a single antique brass button with a plain topstitched fly below it. From there the skirt runs clean over the hip and then opens steadily to the hem, which measures about one and a half times the width of the waistband, so it walks well for its length. The pockets are the detail worth having: one on each side, deep, the opening running at an angle from near the centre out to the side seam, with a small metal rivet holding each end. A single seam runs down the centre front from the fly to the hem, and the hem itself is folded and topstitched into one level line, with no slit and no vent. The ribs of the cord run straight down the skirt, and that is what gives it its quiet vertical line.
