A column that keeps its line
Cherington is a black column dress cut long and easy. It falls from the shoulder without a waist seam and widens only a little on the way down, so the line stays straight from the stand collar to an ankle-skimming hem. Nothing about it is close-fitting, and that is rather the point.
The quiet parts do the work. One gilt ball button closes the collar at the throat, the short placket below it opens into a soft V, and a row of the same buttons runs down each side seam from the hip. Below the lowest button the seam opens, so the dress walks. A winter wedding, a long table, a concert: it goes where you send it.
Fit
- Loose through the body, a straight column with no waist seam, so take your usual size
- Ankle length: the maker measures 125 to 130 cm from shoulder to hem on a size S, which clears the floor over a heel
- Sleeveless, with a clean cut-away armhole and a shoulder that sits a little wide
- Five sizes, UK 8 to UK 16, in our own conversion from the garment measurements

- Upright stand collar, closed at the throat by one gilt ball button on a narrow tab
- Short placket below the collar, opening into a soft V at the chest

- Pulls on, no zip and nothing to fasten at the back
- Smooth matte weave with a quiet sheen where it folds; the maker gives the composition as 100% polyester and shows no fabric label
