A black pencil skirt cut to hold its line. The waistband is deep and sits high at the natural waist, the body runs straight from the hip, and a vent at the back means you can walk properly in it. The hem finishes just below the knee.
Design
The waistband is one flat band of cloth, closed by a single seam along its lower edge, with no loops and nothing on show. Fine darts shape the front and the back, and a seam runs down the centre back into a plain vent across the lowest third. The skirt fastens with a zip set into that centre back seam, which leaves the front as one unbroken piece of cloth from the waistband to the hem.
The cloth is a smooth matte weave with a little give in it. It takes a crease well and it does not shine, which is what keeps a straight skirt reading as tailoring.
Fit
Close through the waist and hip, then straight down to the hem with no flare. Length is taken from the top of the waistband and runs from 64 cm on a size S to 80 cm on a size XXL, so it sits just below the knee on most heights.
