A cashmere hat with one cable up the front
The cable here is not a pattern spread over the whole hat. It is a single panel set on the centre front and nowhere else: a broad plait with a fine rope twist running up either side of it. Everything around it is plain stocking stitch, smooth and quiet, so the cable reads as one deliberate line rather than as texture for its own sake.
The panel also keeps going where most cables stop. Rather than ending where the ribbing begins, it runs down through the band and finishes with it, at the bottom edge.
Fit
One size. The crown is cut deep, so worn as it comes the hat sits back off the brow and slouches a little behind. The ribbed band is knitted straight in as a single thickness rather than folded into a cuff, which keeps it light along the hairline; turn it up once and the hat sits shorter and closer. There is one layer of cloth throughout and no lining, so this is a hat for a cold morning rather than for a hard frost.

- Cashmere. The maker gives the fibre as cashmere in the listing specification, and buyers who have received the hat describe it the same way. No composition label appears in any of the maker's photographs, so we give the fibre without a percentage.
