A check jacket that closes off to one side

The front of this jacket does not fasten down the middle. One panel crosses over the other on a line that runs from the collar down and slightly out, and four buttons hold it: three clustered at the top, then a long clean stretch of cloth, then one on its own at the waist. From across a room it reads like a double breasted jacket. Up close it is a single row, set off centre, and that is the whole design.

The collar is the reason to buy it

It is a tall standing funnel collar cut in the same checked cloth, high enough to sit against your jaw, and it buttons right the way up. Left undone it folds back on itself and frames the neck. Done up it does the work of a scarf you have not had to remember.

The shape is short and square. The hem stops at the high hip, the shoulders sit soft and a touch dropped, and the sleeves stay wide the whole way down to a small buttoned tab at each cuff. The cloth is a brushed woven check with a short nap, a fine houndstooth with a faint wider overcheck laid across it, matte and warm rather than crisp and suited.

One thing to know before you buy. There are no pockets. Not on the chest, not at the hip, nowhere. The front is one unbroken sheet of cloth and that is exactly what keeps the line so clean, but if you want somewhere to put your hands, this is not that jacket.

Fit

Cut deliberately roomy, with around thirty two centimetres of ease through the chest, so take your usual size and expect a boxy shape rather than a close one. There is room for a jumper underneath without going up a size. The hem lands at the high hip on most heights. Full measurements are in the size guide next to the size selector.
