Gathers that do the shaping
Edgeworth is a draped maxi dress cut in a fine stretch jersey. The gathers rise from one shoulder and run diagonally across the bodice, a band of soft pleating wraps the natural waist, and a third fall of gathers drops from the hip and cascades to the floor. There is no zip and nothing to fasten: it pulls on, and the jersey does the rest.
It reads as an evening dress without announcing itself. Long sleeves, a neckline that sits at the base of the throat, and a hem that sweeps the floor over a heel. Put a coat over it and it will go to a winter wedding, a carol concert or a table booked at eight.
Fit
- Close through the body: the jersey has a great deal of stretch and is cut smaller than the body it fits
- Floor length, 145 cm from shoulder to hem on a size S, so it is long over a heel and pools a little without one
- Long sleeves to the wrist, tapered, finishing in a plain cuff
- Two sizes, UK 8 and UK 10, in the maker's own conversion
- Between sizes, size up: there is no fastening to let out

- High round neckline, no collar, softly funnelled where the draping gathers into it
- Gathered in three places: from one shoulder across the bodice, a pleated band at the natural waist, and a cascade from the hip to the hem
- Pulls on, no zip, no buttons, no fastening of any kind
- Long tapered sleeves, plain self-fabric cuffs
- Straight continuous hem, no slit and no vent
- Unlined, and the lower skirt is light enough to read as slightly sheer, so wear a slip under it if you would rather it did not
- No pockets
- Fine matte stretch jersey; the maker gives the composition as polyester with elastane and shows no fabric label

- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, reshape and dry flat
