The layer for the ten degrees a coat is too much for. A short knitted poncho in a wide, soft rib, cut to sit on the shoulders and finish around the waist, with a funnel neck that holds its shape.
Cut and knit
This knitted poncho is worked all over in a wide rib, so it has body without much weight and gives where it needs to. The funnel neck stands around 8 cm and meets the body in a shallow V at the centre front. Two raglan seams run from the collar out to the shoulder points, and below them the sides are simply open: it goes on over your head and your arms come out at the sides. No front opening, no fastening, no buttons.
How it wears
Over a roll neck and trousers on a cold morning at a desk, or over a long sleeved dress when a coat would be too much. It stays where you put it instead of sliding off, which is the one thing a scarf never does, and it leaves your hands free. The maker gives the length as 37 to 42 cm and the width as 47 cm, which puts the hem near the natural waist on most people.
