Merino Wool Cardigan with a Crew Neck and Five Contrast Buttons
The Hawling is a plain merino wool cardigan, cut short and finished without a single flourish. A narrow ribbed band at the round neck, five small dark buttons straight down the front, ribbed cuffs, and a hem that stops at the top of the hip. Nothing else, which is the point.
Design and fabric
The yarn is a fine two ply wool with a short soft halo, knitted in plain stocking stitch with no cables and no texture anywhere on the body. It is thin enough to wear under a coat and warm enough to be the only layer indoors. The front edge is self finished rather than banded, so the buttons sit directly on the knit and the front stays flat when you fasten it. The buttons are matte dark grey with four holes, and they are the same grey on all three colours, so they read as a deliberate contrast on the pale one as much as on the red.
How it wears
Cranberry is a deep wine red with a lot of colour still in it, closer to a fresh cranberry than to a muted oxblood, and it is the one that does the work next to charcoal, navy and denim. Saddle is a quiet mid tan, a camel with the gold taken out of it. Limestone is a pale warm greige, the colour of a weathered Cotswold wall. All three button to the neck on their own, and all three sit well open over a shirt.
Fit
Regular fit with a straight body and set in sleeves. The length is short: the hem falls at the top of the hip, between 56 and 60 cm depending on size. The knit gives a little, but not much. The maker labels this range in Asian sizes, so the UK equivalents are ours and we have taken them conservatively. Full measurements for every size are in the Size guide, next to the size selector. If you are between two sizes, take the larger.
