A tartan midi skirt in a check that has been blurred at the edges, so the pattern reads soft rather than sharp.
Two tones do all the work: a dark taupe brown and a near black, set in large blocks that fade into one another instead of meeting in a hard line, with a fine cross-hatch running through them. It is the quiet end of the tartan family, closer to a shadow check than to a bright clan sett, which is what makes it wearable on an ordinary Tuesday. The cloth is fine, matte and light, and it hangs rather than holds, so the skirt moves when you do.
The fit
The waistband is narrow, flat and cut in the same cloth, and it sits at the natural waist. From there the skirt is smooth over the hip, with no pleats and no gathers anywhere, then widens through panelled seams into an easy A-line. A zip in the side seam does the fastening. The length reads midi, low on the calf and clearly above the ankle. Sizes XS to L, UK 6 to 12. The maker labels the L a UK 12 to 14, but its 80 cm waist reads as a 12 to us, so size up if you are near the top of the range. One thing worth knowing before you choose: the maker publishes its waist measurements twice and labels the same three figures one size apart, so take the size guide next to the size selector as a guide rather than a promise, and take the larger size if you are between two.
