Velvet Midi Dress with a Deep V Neck and Nine Covered Buttons

The Windrush is cut from a dense short pile velvet that reads almost black in the hollow of a fold and lights up olive along every crest. A deep V at the front, nine self covered buttons running from its point down to the waist, and a skirt gathered full enough to move.

Design and fabric

The velvet is a plain pile with a soft nap, so light travels along it and the same panel looks light on one fold and dark on the next. At the front the bodice is built around a narrow shaped panel that rises outwards under the bust in a wide chevron and dips to a point at the waist. Nine small buttons, covered in the same velvet, run down the middle of it. On either side the cloth is drawn into soft gathers where it meets the panel edge. The back is the quiet part of the design: a plain yoke across the shoulders, then dense fine gathers all the way down the upper back to a smooth waistband. There is no zip and no back opening. The dress pulls on.

How it wears

The sleeves are long and narrow through the forearm, with a soft gathered puff at the shoulder and a plain cuff at the wrist. The waist is seamed and close. Below it the skirt is gathered the whole way round and falls at mid calf, the length that works with a boot in December and a heel after dark. Loden Green is a deep muted olive, greyed rather than bright, and it sits easily with brown, cream and black.

Fit

Close through the bust and waist, full from the waist down. The velvet has a little give but the bodice is cut slim, so if you are between sizes, or you would like more room across the bust, take the larger size. Measurements for every size are in the Size guide, next to the size selector.
