Roses worked into the pile
Fairford is a velvet slip dress that keeps its pattern quiet. Small roses sit all over the cloth in the same colour as the ground, lying flat and matte where the pile around them stands up, so it reads plain from across a room and only gives up its roses when the light moves. Two fine straps, a wide scoop neck, and a skirt that falls from the bust to the ankle with no seam at the waist.
It is cut loose and the velvet has some give, so it skims rather than clings. Wear it over a fine roll neck with flat boots through the week, or on its own for an evening in December.

- Close at the bust, then falling straight and opening into a soft A-line
- Maxi length: on the maker's own photographs the hem clears the floor by about a hand's width and sits just above the ankle bone
- Sleeveless, with fine self-fabric shoulder straps
- Seven sizes, UK 6 to 20, in the maker's own conversion
- The maker calls it true to size and suggests sizing up if you are between two sizes, or if you want it looser
- Their two models are 178 cm and 172 cm and both wear the S; the maker notes the taller of the two would be better in the M
- The velvet is a stretch knit with some give

- All-over rose motif worked into the velvet, tonal throughout, showing as a change of texture rather than a change of colour
- Wide, shallow scoop neckline

- No waist seam: the dress falls in one unbroken piece from the bust to the hem
- Continuous hem, no slit and no vent
- No pockets, no buttons and nothing to tie, and no fastening is visible at the front or the side
- Short dense velvet pile, soft to the touch, with a slight stretch
- The maker gives the composition only as synthetic fibre and lists no lining

- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang to dry, do not tumble dry; press on the reverse with a cool iron if it needs it
