A wool hat knitted in cable all the way round
The cables run the whole height of the crown, column after column from the gathered centre down to the band, each one divided from the next by a fine corded rib. Nothing is left plain. On most cable hats the twist is a panel set against smooth knitting; here it is the entire surface, which is what gives the hat its weight in the hand and its depth in the light.
The band is the other half of it. It is knitted wide in a one by one rib and then folded back on itself, so the brim is a real turn up of around 8 cm rather than a printed-on edge, and the wool sits doubled over the ears, where the cold arrives first.
Fit
One size, and wool gives. Laid flat with the brim turned up it measures 23 cm from crown to edge and 22.5 cm across. Above the band the knit is a single thickness with no lining, so the warmth comes from the fibre and from that doubled brim rather than from bulk, and the hat goes under a coat collar without a fight. Unfold the band and you get a longer, looser crown instead.

- 100% wool. The sewn-in composition label has been photographed by two separate buyers, on two different colours, and reads 100% Wool in eight languages. The maker's specification and the product banner give the same figure.
- Cable columns worked across the whole crown, separated by fine corded ribs.

- No pompom and no bobble.
