Two hundred centimetres, and a label that says what it is

A scarf either has the length to work with or it does not. Two hundred centimetres is enough to loop twice and still hang, or to go round once and lie flat under a coat collar, or to drape open over a jacket without creeping off the shoulder. Thirty five centimetres across is enough to hold a fold instead of twisting into a rope.

The cloth is woven and then milled, so the surface has closed up into a soft brushed nap with no stitch to find anywhere in it. That is what decides how it hangs. It takes a fold and keeps it, where a knitted scarf springs back out. Both ends finish in a row of twisted fringe, short and evenly cut.

Fit

One size. The maker gives 200cm long by 35cm wide. Two buyers have photographed it beside a tape measure and both read a shade over 35cm across, so the figure holds. They disagree about what that width will do: one wraps it over the head quite happily, another finds it just short of that. Read 35cm as generous round the neck and borderline as a hood.

On the handle, most buyers call it soft and say it does not prickle. A few notice a slight texture against bare skin, which is ordinary for wool at this weight. This is not a featherweight yarn. It is a proper winter cloth at around 160g, and it behaves like one.

Details

  • 100% wool, stated in full on the maker's own tag. Buyers in three countries have photographed that tag on three different colours and it reads the same each time.
  • Woven and milled to a soft brushed nap. No knit stitch, no rib, no pattern.
  • Twisted fringe at both ends, short and evenly cut.
  • 200cm long, 35cm wide, around 160g. One size.
  • Dry cleaning is what the maker recommends. Do not machine wash, do not wring, dry flat.
  • Made in China.
  • Four colours: Honey, Marmalade, Meadowsweet and Elderberry.
